The majority of the coffee grown in Burundi is Bourbon, which is typically one of the sweeter varieties with a richer flavour. Gitega Red Bourbon has notes of citrus, melon and berry flavours. Burundi has long been overlooked in comparison to neighbouring East African speciality coffee producing countries. However, the Burundi season is one of the highlights of the annual coffee calendar. The country's coffee is almost entirely produced by smallholder farmers, and much of this small-scale production is of exceptional quality. Thanks to its extremely sweet, clean and often floral coffee, Burundi is increasingly appearing on the map of the global coffee market every year.
